Patterns of Life

One child asked about how the pretty pattern inside of the sunflower was made. We talked about what this pattern looked like and what it reminded them of. We wondered about similar patterns we’d seen—like seashells and tree rings. We discussed how this pattern shows up everywhere naturally, even in our own bodies. We drew it out and did some simple math, and the children began to understand the basic principle of this beautiful growth pattern, the magical golden ratio or Fibonacci sequence. Knowledge of this pattern initiated more wonder and curiosity, and the children began to make connections on their own—this is learning.
